Lowlights & Highlights: March 31, 2012

I guess Carson Daly was trying to make a joke...and failed miserably. The comment he made was in response to a flight attendant going off to the point that he had to be restrained and they had to land the plane. Daly went on to say "With my luck, it would be like ... 'this is the flight going to [the gay pride parade] in San Francisco ... I mean, that would be my colleagues," and then said something else in a stereotypically gay voice. Was he aware that A) this is 2012 AD, not BC and B) the mic was definitely on? Anyway, Daly made it quite clear that he is no historian. He has since been educated on the matter.

When the four planes were hijacked on 9/11, there was one where the passengers managed to overtake the hijackers. This was the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, flight 93 if memory serves. On this plane was Mark Bingham. He was 6 foot 4. He was a rugby player. He helped to storm the cockpit. He was also gay. He IS a hero. Let this incident with Carson Daly be a lesson that everyone would do well to learn: do not presume to say what gay people are and are not capable of. You do nothing but show your own ignorance and arrogance.

Apparently, Rick Santorum is no fan of getting tweets from me. I found out this week that I was blocked from his twitter account @RickSantorum. For the record, I don't harass him, I don't threaten him, I don't even call him names (except homophobe, but only because it's an apt description given his record on LGBT equality). I do, however, tweet him in the form of a short letter every so often about some stance that he has with which I disagree, such as:

Also, I tweet quite often using his last name as a hash-tag (like the one above), and there are the many blog entries that involve him in some way. But honestly, I haven't done anything warranting an outright block. Maybe he has a thin skin.

There have been plenty of times when people in the Twitterverse have tweeted me something nasty, juvenile, homophobic, or whatever else. I have gotten into many a Twitter-battle, even multiple times with the likes of arch-homophobe Peter Labarbera (if you don't know who that is, count yourself lucky). I have yet to block anyone, not to say I haven't been tempted. You know what I do instead? I stand my ground. I argue my points using logic and try to keep the childlike tactics out of the conversation. I try to take the high road when possible. Blocking people just makes it seems like I can't handle what's being thrown my way. It's like retreating. Or Santorum's case, it's like starting a fight by saying the inane, factually incorrect and homophobic things he constantly says and then not having the means with which to defend yourself by blocking the other person/people. Maybe I have a thicker skin than Santorum. If this is the way he deals with people with whom he disagrees, especially little ol' me, he is not fit for the presidency.

Twitter Watch: Santorum Blockage

I think I touched a nerve. Oopsie...

Rick Santorum: Getting the KKK Vote?

Maggie Gallagher Defends Race-Baiting

Thomas Roberts Interviews "Bully" Filmmaker

The Wrap-Up: March 30, 2012

Looks like MSNBC made a scheduling oopsie with Maggie Gallagher. I feel like someone may get fired for this.

Rick Santorum thinks that people without photo ID's are trying to commit voter fraud. Then again, he also thinks about people having sex with dogs, so there's that.

An anti "gay propaganda" bill has reached the Russian Parliament. Did all of America's theocrats had immigrate there?

The Tennessee legislature apparently thinks states are supposed to be laboratories of theocracy instead of laboratories of democracy.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is facing an uprising from his fellow Tories. How dare he want everyone to be treated equally under the law.

The Paul Ryan budget (which passed 228-191 in the house by the way) takes a huge bite out of Pell Grants. The GOP is bound and determined to ensure that this country can't compete in the global labor market.

The good news about this budget: it has little chance of getting through the Senate.

And lastly, though the Obama administration has been far from perfect (*cough*NDAA *cough*), here is a rundown of his 10 greatest achievements.

A Tribute to Newt Gingrich

The Wrap-Up: March 29, 2012

While voting fraud incidents are very few and very far between, incidents of people being denied the right to vote are on the rise. Thanks Republicans!!!

More details from NOM's documentation: get stupid/pretty spokespeople. Because the Bible says so...right?

Speaking of NOM spokespersons, Maggie Gallagher was a no-show yesterday for an MSNBC interview. The show went on without her...somehow.

Mitt Romney's latest foray into (what he thinks is) humor: talking about his dad closing down a factory. Hardy-har-har...

With the Supreme Court ending it's hearings in the Affordable Care Act, the Washington Post takes us through 3 possible scenarios if the mandate falls.

Fox actually said something pro-envirnoment. In related news, Hell has frozen over.

President Obama probably wishes that the election were today instead of in 8 months. That's a political eternity.

Rick Santorum's home-state lead over Mitt Romney is virtually gone. Come on Rick, even Gingrich won his home state.

And lastly, I believe that this video will speak for itself.

Who Would Make the Better Parents?

Ann Coulter: Attack the Obama Girls

The Wrap-Up: March 28, 2012

NOM President Brian Brown
Leaked documents from the National Organization for Marriage (Discrimination) reveal many of the group's tactics.

The fallout from NOM's racist deceit is beginning in earnest.

Newt Gingrich tells us why he has no intention of exiting the Republican race. Personally, I just think he's looking for his next ex-wife while using the campaign as a cover.

The extended Republican race has Mitt Romney in a mad dash for cash.

"Protect All N.C. Families" is trying to mobilize some big money to fight the effort to constitutionally ban marriage equality in the state.

With House Republicans having unveiled their disastrous budget plan, the House Progressive Caucus laid out a different path.

In the wake of DADT's fall, gay pride events/organizations are popping up in the nation's military academies.

After nearly half a million signatures, the film "Bully" has won something of a victory in the rating fight.

And lastly, George Zimmerman's lawyer is running from MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell.

Humour Files: Join the GOP!!!

The Wrap-Up: March 27, 2012

Did you know that when a reporter asks a question you don't like, that's called harassment? Rick Santorum said so, so it must be true.

There is actually a coalition of Republicans for the "Obamacare" mandate? Will wonders never cease...

Speaking of the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare's" actual title), yesterday was the day the mandate hit the Supreme Court.

Ever wonder what may have happened if the Clinton health care plan had passed?

Some Albanian officials aren't too happy with gay pride parades. I feel like that place has bigger (and actual) problems on which to concentrate.

Another conservative, anti-gay boycott is a Super Nova sized failure.

Slate.com asked its reader when they think the glass closet of men's professional sports will be broken (and you can find the original article HERE).

One would think that Rick Santorum being from Pennsylvania would give him home-field advantage in the state's April 24th primary...right?

Andrew Sullivan and Maggie Gallagher are throwing down here in the Commonwealth.

And lastly, Rick Santorum ignores yet another part of the Bible, like that part about turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:39).

The Conservative Agenda: Rob From the Poor

The Religious Wrong: Gays Are Possessed

The Wrap-Up: March 26, 2012

This weekend saw Rick Santorum win the Louisiana Primary, but Mitt Romney still has reason to smile.

A move by House Republicans could cost nearly 2 million jobs. And we should for these people because...?

There is an interesting reason for President Obama's reluctance in backing marriage equality that I of all people did not think of (but definitely should have).

One openly lesbian mayor has her own take on President Obama's stance on marriage equality.

Another Tea Party favorite has lost their luster.

The New York Times has the story of growing up ("visibly") gay in 1980's Morocco.

The bad of Paul Ryan's GOP House budget just keeps piling up.

Cleveland, Ohio was the site of what may have been the "largest illegal mass wedding" ever.

And lastly, Dennis Kucinich (D-OH...for now) is making some strange moves.

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Lowlights & Highlights: March 24, 2012

Paul Ryan's budget proposal is an absolute disaster. It literally steals from the poor and gives to the rich, it blows a whole in the nations debt/deficit to the tune of 3 TRILLION dollars (Obama's budget reduces it), and a host of other things. It's so bad that even faith leaders, generally more prone to support Republicans (like Ryan) than Democrats, are up in arms about how much this will hurt already disadvantaged Americans. Meanwhile, there are other Republicans saying that his budget proposal doesn't go far enough. Maybe they just want taxes on the poor to be 100% and taxes on the rich to be 0% (even though some corporations pay negative taxes already, meaning the government gives THEM money). It seems evident that the GOP is bound and determined to ruin this nation. You can find detail of the budget proposal HERE, HERE, and HERE.

In yet another attempt at overturning the marriage equality bill passed in 2010, the New Hampshire legislature failed. It's really amazing when you consider a few things. Not only are both of the state's legislative houses dominated by Republicans, but the party has a theoretical veto-proof majority in both houses. In other words, had they passed this, the Democratic governor would have vetoed the bill, but the Republicans could have overturned said veto. However, the Republican sponsors of the bill could not even muster a simple majority in the state House, where the bill died on the floor. I believe this is mostly due to the state's motto and the fact that New Hampshire has more of a libertarian strain. Many of the Republicans in the state legislature cited this as to why they voted against the bill.

The funniest part is that earlier in the day that the bill failed, the president of the National Organization for Marriage (Discrimination), Brian Brown, predicted a victory for his side on this issue. So much for his foresight.

Madonna's Trip to Russia

I for one am glad she's is going their and speaking on this law. I know some people want her not to go and give St Petersburg the business, but by going there and speaking on this abomination of a law, she will get people talking and more voices will be heard. The fact that this story made it to this news organization is evidence of that fact. In the long term, I think this is a better way to get the law undone. I'm not the biggest Madonna fan (please don't revoke my Gay Card), but I'm definitely glad she is doing what she is doing.

The Wrap-Up: March 23, 2012

Upon closer inspection of GOP rules, Newt Gingrich's road to the nomination is even more difficult at this point than previously thought.

Speaking of Newt, having pinned his hopes on winning Southern states, he is polling a dismal third place in Louisiana (which will have a primary this weekend).

An Atlanta teen is suing after being removed as Student President by faculty for not being homophobic. Serves him right!?!

Unfortunately for Rick Santorum (but fortunately for the rest of us), talking too much about religion would turn against him in a general election.

The legal duo behind the fight against Proposition 8 sound off on the rating of the film "Bully." A legal challenge perhaps?

Dharun Ravi speaks about what happened with Tyler Clementi.

Here in the Commonwealth, President Obama is widening his lead over both Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney.

NOM has launched a boycott of Starbucks because of the company's support of Washington's marriage equality bill. here's to it being as successful as NOM's effort to overturn marriage equality in New Hampshire.

A Michigan Native American tribe may soon vote to enact marriage equality.

And lastly, actor/director Kevin Smith takes on conservatives, marriage, and pornography.

Paul Ryan's Disastrous Budget

Single Parenthood = Child Abuse

The Wrap-Up: March 22, 2012

There was a resounding victory for marriage equality in New Hampshire yesterday. The surprising part: we have some Republicans (a lot of them in fact) to thank for this.

The new budget proposal from GOP House members would exacerbate "Too-Big-To-Fail."

Not only this, but faith leaders, including a Catholic priest from Paul Ryan's district (Ryan is the main author of the plan) are against how it "robs from the poor."

I was wondering why Etch-A-Sketch was trending on Twitter on Wednesday. This is why.

Was the Illinois Primary the beginning of the end of the GOP nomination?

Rick Santorum is learning that being authentic is a bad thing when you are authentically against so many groups of people.

Elizabeth Warren says it is time for President Obama to finish evolving on marriage equality.

Despite all of the people in politics who sounded off on the Limbaugh "slut" incident, there was at least one group from whom there was mostly silence: GOP female legislators.

Some employers are apparently asking for the sign-in information (i.e. password) for current and potential employee's Facebook pages. Um, how is that legal?

And lastly, I don't think that MSNBC's Thomas Roberts is not a fan of NOM's Brian Brown...and I don't blame him one bit.

Tweet of the Day: March 21, 2012

I couldn't decide between the two.

Rick Santorum's Post-Illinois Speech

This was a disaster of a speech. He's definitely trying to spin this loss into a "positive." Bringing out the anti-science, Reagan name-dropping, anti-teleprompter schtick.

It should also be noted that having deep convictions is a bad thing when those convictions are about taking rights away from huge swaths of society. I DO trust that Rick Santorum would do these things, which is why I would never vote for him. Apparently, that goes for a lot of other people as well.

The Wrap-Up: March 21, 2012

There was a problem with some of the ballots in yesterday's Illinois primary, which is probably the closest to voter fraud we'll get in this election.

Newt isn't the only unpopular Gingrich in the household.

The House's GOP budget proposal is disastrous...unless you have enough 0's in your income of course.

St. Petersburg Russia is facing some international pressure after enacting an anti-gay law against, what it considers, "pro-gay propaganda."

I'm hoping that it is possible to revoke a Nobel Peace Prize from someone who wants homosexuality criminalized. That's pretty much the opposite of peaceful.

An Idaho legislator thinks women don't know when they've been raped. Has he even talked to a rape victim? I'm thinking not so much.

I have been thinking lately that Rick Santorum is trying to lose this presidential bid. He's anti-contraception (there goes the female vote), he will declare a war on pornography (there goes the male vote), and he told Puerto Ricans that they should speak English to become a state (there goes a chunk of the Hispanic vote). Now, he doesn't care about the unemployment rate.

Speaking of Rick, if you don't vote for him, you're a Godless heathen.

Dan Savage responded to Rick Santorum praying for him.

And lastly, part of Mitt Romney's speech after winning the Illinois primary...which doesn't go particularly well.

The Religious Wrong: Blame Kinsey For Pedophilia

So according to these people, correlation equals causation? Yet again, at least in this instance, patently false.

As far as anything being commonly known as the "K-Bomb," I have never, ever heard that phrase until seeing this video. I Googled and didn't really find anything like what these two people were discussing with the exception of something from a Catholic website. That particular site, however, was talking about Weisman (the lady in the video) using the term. That was literally the only place I found "K-Bomb" used in this context. So as for this being common knowledge or a common term, that claim is false on its face. My hunch is that Weisman (or someone of her ilk) came up with this term and it is only used within that circle. It is anything but common.

Weisman also says the pedophile problem hasn't been happening forever. How exactly would she know that? When the Church was the law some centuries ago, I'm sure this was going on then. The difference is that in addition to the "normal" fear a kid would have about reporting your average authority figure, there is the added reality that a Church figure would somehow retaliate against said child with zero fear of repercussions. It would be relatively easy for the power of the Church to cover this up (which they still try to do to this day).

If the Catholic Church wanted to do something about the pedophilia problem within its ranks, it certainly could. A zero tolerance policy would send a strong message that the Church will no longer stand for its own officials harming children. Besides the obvious fact that this would save innumerable kids from molestation, it would be damn good PR. Instead, the Church does naught but hide pedophiles from criminal justice, sacrifice more children, and spend hundreds of millions of parishioners dollars on court settlements.

In short, the answer to the question "why does the Catholic Church have such a major pedophile problem" has nothing to do with Albert Kinsey or his research. The reason that the Catholic Church has such a major pedophile problem is because THE CATHOLIC CHURCH REFUSES TO LIFT A FINGER TO STOP IT.

The Wrap-Up: March 20, 2012

It's Primary Day in Illinois and it may be another close one between Santorum and Romney.

Rick Santorum complains whenever he's on television and someone asks him about his stances on social issues, then goes on the road and says this. This is called trying to "have your cake and eat it too." According to my grandmother, that doesn't work.

Santorum did just that on Monday morning during an appearance on "Morning Joe" while talking to former colleague and fellow conservative Joe Scarborough.

A friend of mine told me about this bumper sticker over the weekend. If this is the best the right can do, they truly are pathetic.

The Obama campaign is boasting some big fundraising numbers.

While President Obama is still "evolving" on marriage equality, former President Jimmy Carter (an Evangelical Christian by the way) has beaten him to the punch.

Yet again, a religious organization at a public university tries to get away with banning gay members and yet again, the courts say NO.

The Tennessee legislature is taking the war on women pretty far.

And lastly, did you know there was a secret plot to destroy golf?

Lowlights & Highlights: March 17, 2012

First, HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!! I hope everyone has fun, but be responsible folks.

Second, I completely forgot to do this last week. I'll try to get in the groove of doing this on a weekly basis. Now onto this week's stories.

Lowlight

I would have to say it was the Dharun Ravi trial which had the verdict read on Friday. Don't get me wrong, it's not because I disagreed with the verdict, especially since he was found guilty on most of the charges. The reason is that this reminded me of this whole anti-gay bullying (and bullying in general) thing and the far-too-many suicides that result. No matter what Ravi's sentence ends up being, Tyler Clementi can't be brought back, and Ravi's sentence will never compare to the pain suffered by Tyler, his friends, and his family. Some wounds can't be healed, you just learn to live with the scars.

Highlight

Granted this video was posted on YouTube in February, but it just came to my attention this week. As someone who has been through a similar scenario (who hasn't had a thing for someone they couldn't have, gay or straight?), I could relate. It may seem like a bit of a downer, but wait until you get to the end. The end was a good one.

Rick Santorum: All You Need To Know

The Road We've Traveled

The Wrap-Up: March 16, 2012

Focus on the Family has decided to make it legal to discriminate against gay people in Colorado. How...Christian of them...

Another Republican is breaking ranks on tax policy. Grover Norquist must be fuming.

Here are three things that could change the way Congress works, and I'm on board with all of them.

I've had a soft spot in my heart for the San Diego Chargers...until I read this. You can now consider me adamantly anti-Philip Rivers.

Rick Santorum to Puerto Ricans: Speak English!!! Him winning the GOP nomination is pretty much kissing the Hispanic vote goodbye.

A judge overruled the inclusion of biased language in a proposed repeal of marriage equality in Washington state.

Senator Richard Lugar apparently can't vote in the Indiana Primary because of a  residency violation. I'm wondering how he can still be the state's Senator.

Showing just how trustworthy they are, the House GOP "leadership" plans to break its word on a deal made with Democrats last year.

Pat Robertson on...Oral Sex *cringe*

The Wrap-Up: March 15, 2012

Tennessee's "Don't Say Gay" bill may be dead...again. Better this trash of a bill than kids who would suffer because of it. Of course what the state will turn its attention to instead...isn't much better.

Harry Reid (D-NV) forced Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) hand on the Senate voting on federal judges. You read that right, Democrats actually made republicans do something for once.

A Uganda gay group is suing Scott Lively (largely credited with inspiring Uganda's "Kill the Gays" bill).

Filed under things Mitt Romney wants everyone to forget: a certain vow he made in his (failed) 1994 Senate race against Ted Kennedy.

Just when you think Sarah Palin can't sink any lower into ignorance and inflammatory comments, she finds a way. To bad she doesn't put the same effort into learning about the world around her. Then again, she's pretty much on her own planet.

This week in TERRIBLE ideas from Arizona, being able to fire a woman for using birth control. Doesn't this legislature have bigger (or actual) problems to deal with?

A former Goldman Sachs executive has resigned due to the "toxic" nature of the industry.

GLAAD has begun what it calls the "Commentator Accountability Project."

And lastly, say goodbye to the Encyclopedia Britannica.

The Wrap-Up: March 14, 2012

Last night was not a good night to be Mitt Romney...if such a thing even exists.

A Pennsylvania legislator has withdrawn a marriage "protection" amendment from consideration.

Anybody want to buy a national park? Teddy Roosevelt (a Republican who supported/started national parks) must be spinning in his grave.

The Governor of Tennessee is still none too fond of the state's proposed "Don't Say Gay" bill. I'm still surprised that this is coming from a Republican governor.

Here is a very surprising (and encouraging) source of support for marriage equality: an Evangelical Christian Republican from Iowa.

One of the most under-reported problems facing the LGBT community is our homeless youth.

Steve Schmidt, the campaign manager for John McCain's 2008 presidential run has some...not-so-nice things to say about Sarah Palin.

Denmark may become nation #11 to legalize marriage equality. What's that nation that calls itself "the land of the free" again?

Members of Congress are signing onto a petition to lower the rating of the film "Bully" from R to PG-13.

And lastly, Jon Stewart takes on conservative tax master Grover Norquist (there are 3 videos, all worth watching).

The Religious Wrong: Big, Bad Volunteers

So, we should not be celebrating the spirit of volunteerism, but we SHOULD celebrate money hoarders? Where in the Bible is that exactly? This is a whole new level of idiocy.

Of course, we should be teaching our young people that volunteering and community service are a good things (assuming it isn't a sentence from a judge after a crime of course). Think of where this world would be if we looked down on those who give their time to help others in need. Helping others is the Christian thing to do because when we are in need, many of us could use a helping hand. Treat others as you would have them treat you.

It's also ironic that this preacher mentions being judged on the content of one's character on a show that judges people on...other things.

This man has no place in ANY clergy. He sounds more like someone who has been bought by the Koch Brothers than anything else.

The Wrap-Up: March 13, 2012

Mitt liking grits may not be enough to pull off a couple of wins in the South from today's primaries.

Someone actually thinks that the super-rich don't have enough influence in politics. Guess who he's backing in the presidential race?

On the other hand, some progressive groups are attempting to diminish the influence of big donors and corporations in politics.

It's no surprise to me that in the South, President Obama's religion is still an issue. Things just change slowly there apparently.

Given all of the talk about SuperPAC's and Citizens United, you would think this GOP race was the most expensive one ever. About that...

Rick Santorum's brand of conservatism includes outlawing teleprompters. So much for less government and fewer regulations.

Chris Christie of all people is saying someone (an ex-Navy Seal no less) doesn't have the right to be a jerk. Hypocrisy much?

The grassroots effort to change the rating of "Bully" from R to PG-13 is getting support from some big names.

And lastly, Cracked.com has an epic take-down of One Million Moms Forty-Thousand Moms and the American "Family" Association.

Here is something to brighten your Monday:

I love The Onion.

Marriage News Watch: March 12, 2012

The Religious Right: Standing Against Tony Perkins

The Wrap-Up: March 12, 2012

This weekend saw a pair of Caucuses take place, but the overall picture of the GOP nomination looks pretty much the same.

How does Newt Gingrich plan on staying in the race? One word: Twitter.

One of the primary groups behind Minnesota's campaign to constitutionally ban marriage equality is under investigation.

Unlike most people in the sports world, whether coaches, players, commentators, etc., Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban knows how to make an ACTUAL apology after saying something somewhat homophobic.

Save California (a certified hate-group) has begun its campaign to overturn SB48, the bill passed which mandates the teaching of the contribution the LGBT community has made to society. After all, having kids know that the guy who wrote Fanfare for the Common Man (Aaron Copland) was gay would ruin the country...

The Pope took some time out of his busy pedophile protecting schedule to denounce marriage equality. Seriously, this guy needs to adjust his priorities.

At a Pennsylvania school, a flippant remark goes out of control, "telephone" style.

There are some great polling numbers in the fight against North Carolina's Amendment One (the attempt to ban marriage equality constitutionally). I'm cautiously optimistic because remember, it always comes down to turnout.

And lastly, with so many southern primaries on the horizon, Mitt Romney's serial-pandering reaches new depths.

Trailer: Bully

This film was made so that people would see the plight of victims of bullying in schools across this country. Unfortunately, the MPAA decided to rate it as "R" (apparently due to violence) which pretty much means that it would not be seen in schools, which is where it needs to be seen the most. A campaign is under way to get the rating changed to PG-13. Hopefully, this campaign is successful because if this film helps to save even one child's life, it will not have been made in vain.

The Religious Wrong: Pray the Tornadoes Away

Pat Robertson really thinks he knows everything? Now he is giving us meteorology lessons. Thanks, but I'll stick to The Weather Channel instead.

Besides that,  he is literally telling people the tornadoes are their fault for building homes in tornado alley. Earthquakes are their fault for building homes on seismically active ground, and so on. Is there any place on this planet that is prone to zero natural disasters? I'm pretty sure the answer to that question is a resounding NO.

As to the prayer part, exactly how many people have to pray to make tornadoes stop? How hard do these people need to pray? Does the Bible tell us this, because I missed that verse in Bible School apparently. It would also appear that Robertson has never heard that old adage "The Lord hears all prayers, even if sometimes the answer is no."

Anyone asking Pat Robertson for advice should have their heads checked instead...much like Robertson himself.
