Grover Norquist Demands Higher Taxes

...Norquist repeated a conservative lie that since President Obama has been in office, “We got four bad years of higher taxes” that are stifling the economy, and that “instead of higher taxes, we need economic growth.” For nearly four years, Republicans and their teabagger acolytes have complained they were “taxed enough already” despite the President reduced taxes to their lowest levels in nearly 60 years to jumpstart economic recovery and help struggling families survive the Republican economic devastation still plaguing the nation. Where Norquist seriously lied was his contention that what will save the economy and spur unprecedented growth is returning the nation to Reagan-era taxation levels that would promote growth and pay down the debt racked up over the past four years.

The problem with Norquist’s assertion is that under the Reagan administration, tax rates were higher than under President Obama, and he proposes keeping them lower for 98% of Americans as part of the fiscal cliff negotiations and to continue growing the economy.  It is curious that Norquist cites Reagan’s tax policy, because although he initially cut taxes within three months of taking office, within weeks he asked Congress to close loopholes that resulted in the largest tax increase in four decades to cover revenue shortfalls, and over the course of the next eight years, he raised taxes 9 times. The simple truth Norquist, and most Republicans, will never admit is that under President Obama, taxes are substantially lower than under Reagan...

Another conservative that needs to descend from Bullshit Mountain.

The Wrap-Up: May 28, 2012

Bedford County, Virginia
HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!! While you're out grilling and enjoying the day off, take some time to remember what this holiday is truly about.

The House Republican's Summer wish list read like a how to of taking the country back into recession.

A ballooning Hispanic population may turn North Carolina into a long term swing state.

Perhaps all is not lost with the Republican party as at least GOP candidates are refusing to sign "the pledge." Grover Norquist can't be happy about this, which means it must be a good thing.

When it comes to voting and voting rights, it's all but official that Florida is the worst state in the country.

Monument Terrace in Lynchburg, Virgina
Kansas is the latest state to freak out over the non-existent Sharia Law threat.

In the past two weeks, over 300,000 people have thanked President Barack Obama for his public support marriage equality. I wonder if the opposition even bothered trying a counter petition this time (like their Starbucks failure).

Governor Scott Walker's (R-WI) recall opponent, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D), took him to task on a number of issues face-to-face.

And lastly, after saying he had never been to the home of a same-sex married couple in a resent interview, Tony Perkins has been offered an invitation. A response is pending (which I can't wait to hear about).

The Wrap-Up: March 16, 2012

Focus on the Family has decided to make it legal to discriminate against gay people in Colorado. How...Christian of them...

Another Republican is breaking ranks on tax policy. Grover Norquist must be fuming.

Here are three things that could change the way Congress works, and I'm on board with all of them.

I've had a soft spot in my heart for the San Diego Chargers...until I read this. You can now consider me adamantly anti-Philip Rivers.

Rick Santorum to Puerto Ricans: Speak English!!! Him winning the GOP nomination is pretty much kissing the Hispanic vote goodbye.

A judge overruled the inclusion of biased language in a proposed repeal of marriage equality in Washington state.

Senator Richard Lugar apparently can't vote in the Indiana Primary because of a  residency violation. I'm wondering how he can still be the state's Senator.

Showing just how trustworthy they are, the House GOP "leadership" plans to break its word on a deal made with Democrats last year.

The Wrap-Up: March 14, 2012

Last night was not a good night to be Mitt Romney...if such a thing even exists.

A Pennsylvania legislator has withdrawn a marriage "protection" amendment from consideration.

Anybody want to buy a national park? Teddy Roosevelt (a Republican who supported/started national parks) must be spinning in his grave.

The Governor of Tennessee is still none too fond of the state's proposed "Don't Say Gay" bill. I'm still surprised that this is coming from a Republican governor.

Here is a very surprising (and encouraging) source of support for marriage equality: an Evangelical Christian Republican from Iowa.

One of the most under-reported problems facing the LGBT community is our homeless youth.

Steve Schmidt, the campaign manager for John McCain's 2008 presidential run has some...not-so-nice things to say about Sarah Palin.

Denmark may become nation #11 to legalize marriage equality. What's that nation that calls itself "the land of the free" again?

Members of Congress are signing onto a petition to lower the rating of the film "Bully" from R to PG-13.

And lastly, Jon Stewart takes on conservative tax master Grover Norquist (there are 3 videos, all worth watching).

The Wrap-Up: March 9, 2012

ADDENDUM: The February jobs report came in and 227,000 jobs were created in that month. Get ready to hear the GOP explain how it's all thanks to them and the Obama administration deserves zero credit. (The report came out just after this was originally posted)

The settlement reached in the Anoka-Hennpin school district has some far-reaching affects regrading anit-LGBT bullying.

There's some potentially good news out of Maryland. Remember, at the end of the day, these things usually come down to who turns out at the polls.

As a true sign of the impending apocalypse, Republicans are speaking against Grover Norquist's anti-tax pledge.

Yesterday marked the 500th day of Barack Obama's "evolution" on marriage equality.

I think when the military was doing the training after DADT was repealed, they missed a spot (or this Master Sergeant was out sick that day).

I'm wondering why a Nebraska football coach was testifying on (in this case, against) a town ordinance prohibiting LGBT discrimination. Although he certainly comes off as an expert...on doing the discriminating that is.

GOProud and Sam "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelberger are working together, meaning neither has any credibility (not that they did before of course).

And lastly, it looks like OMM's boycott of JCPenney didn't go so well. What a pity...

The Wrap-Up: January 30, 2012

When Grover Norquist, the conservative anti-tax crusader, was asked about what to do if Obama doesn't extend the Bush tax-cuts...let's just say the guy is on a bit of a power-trip.

It turns out that all of that "voter-fraud" being fought against in South Carolina isn't voter fraud, it's bureaucratic incompetence and silly mistakes.

When Republicans can't block and obstruct, they try to boycott instead.

Virginia's legislature really has its priorities askew...to say the least.

If this is what Newt Gingrich does after church, I don't know why he bothers going. Church isn't doing him any good.

This is probably the most delicious political statement I have ever heard of.

EBay gave the state of Utah an ultimatum.

And lastly, one little cartoon (hat tip: MoveOn.org) sums up 2 decades of GOP strategy.

The Wrap-Up: December 2, 2011

Current Governor Bob McDonnell (R-VA)
Larry Sabato of UVA's Center for Politics has a rundown of the Senate races for the 2012 election.

Virginia's 2013 gubernatorial race may get a little cannibalistic on the GOP side. Given the likely players, that suits this Virginia boy just fine.

A Russian group has begun airing this ad to counter a proposed anti "gay propaganda" measure.

The Colombian government is using  false pretense to keep a gay dad from his adoptive sons.

Here is a video so good, it went viral...TWICE!!!

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH)
Just as his star starts to rise in this election cycle, Newt Gingrich says something like this. He really loves America's youth (at least the ones with trust funds).

As if there had been any questions about it before, John Boehner has announced he is NOT an economist. Given his positions on economic issues, I'm pretty sure everyone had assumed as much.

To clarify, raising taxes on millionaires is bad. Raising taxes on the middle-class? That's another story...

Two separate attempts to extend the payroll tax, one from each party, both failed in the Senate. It looks like some of these Senators have been listening to Grover Norquist.

Daniel Craig
In some shocking news, there is a Republican in the Senate for ending all of those tax loopholes for the wealthy. Call me a skeptic, but I'll wait until I see how he votes on such a measure.

One of the most well known conservative pollsters seems to think that Democrats talking about taxing the rich will help them win...mainly because it would (and is).

And lastly, Daniel Craig pretty much spoke for me in this assessment of the Kardashian herd.
