The survey finds that 76 percent of doctors in the U.S. and 78 percent of doctors internationally would personally prescribe medical marijuana to a fictional 68-year-old woman with deteriorating cancer. 

In commentary published along with the survey, researchers explained the reasoning that most respondents provided for their support of medicinal cannabis. “Many [respondents] pointed out the known dangers of prescription narcotics, supported patient choice, or described personal experience with patients who benefited from the use of marijuana,” wrote the authors. Studies have shown that medical marijuana can relieve pain, ease nausea, and promote appetite, making it a promising treatment option for Americans with painful or chronic medical conditions such as cancer.

Patient advocacy organizations and doctors’ groups such as the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians have called on the government to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I controlled substance in order to facilitate more research into the drug’s effectiveness. Even government organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, which is under the National Institutes of Health, have found that using cannabis may have health benefits, including the potential to fight breast and colorectal cancer.

You may have heard that marijuana smokers get hungry after using the drug, and the authors of a new study point out that marijuana users tend to take in more calories than their counterparts. But, their study found that pot smokers aren't any more likely to be obese than non-smokers. 

Equally surprising, the researchers found marijuana may actually be a tool in controlling blood sugar -- and may be key in helping diabetics keep their condition in check. 

The new study, which was published on May 15 in The American Journal of Medicine, showed that regular marijuana use was linked to significantly lower levels of fasting insulin. Smokers were also less likely to be insulin resistant, a condition where the body's cells no longer respond to a hormone that controls carbohydrates and fat metabolism called insulin. High levels of fasting insulin and insulin resistance could lead to diabetes...

Keep in mind however that despite even with the benefits laid out here, marijuana use has also been linked to strokes in young adults and testicular cancer in young men. Like almost anything in the world of medicine, the risks have to be weighed alongside the benefits.

What To Look For On Election Night

As the night unfolds when polls begin closing (7:00pm Eastern is when the first round of polls close) and votes start being counted, here are some interesting things to look for:

-The legalization of marijuana - medicinal and recreational - will be on the ballot in three western states: Colorado Washington, and Oregon. Massachusetts, Arkansas, and Montana may legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes only.

-Tea Party favourites and GOP firebrands Allen West (FL), Michele Bachmann (MN), and Joe "Deadbeat Dad" Walsh (IL) are all in very close races and may be unseated.

-Maine will have a ballot initiative that would legalize marriage equality (it is projected to pass).

-Maryland and Washington state have ballot initiatives on whether or not to uphold their states' recently passed marriage equality bills.

-Minnesota has a proposed constitutional amendment that would define marriage as solely between one man and one woman. The measure needs at least a 50% yes vote to pass (instead of merely a plurality).

-One of the judges in the Iowa Supreme Court who ruled in favour of marriage equality in that state is up for a retention vote and anti-equality forces are gunning for his seat (3 of his colleagues lost their seats after being targeted for supporting equality).

-There are several close Senate races such as those in Montana, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin that may decide which party leads the Senate.

-There are claims of voter fraud and faulty machines in Pennsylvania, and Ohio has had some shady dealings in the electoral process care of their Sec. of State Jon Husted. If Ohio winds up an electoral disaster, don't be surprised.

For good or ill (though most likely both), it will be a long night.

I had no idea that marijuana was as "legal" as it is (at least where states are concerned), but it may become even more so.

Members of the Ohio House of Representatives have sign on to a call for the state to protect citizens from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identification..

And lastly, President Obama is urging Maryland voters to vote against the state's proposed marriage equality ban. With Mitt Romney supporting a federal marriage ban, I wonder who I should vote for...?
