Sports: The Last Closet

The Last Closet campaign is:

  • Committed to establishing the connection between positive gay role models and the reduction of gay teen suicide and bullying incidents.
  • A grassroots movement and campaign to end the prevailing silence around homophobia in pro sports and to encourage professional athletes, commissioners, team owners and other members of the sports world to consent to in-depth interviews about this subject. These interviews reveal what the current climate would be for a publicly out pro athlete (and what kind of support systems could/should be put in place).
  • A campaign that seeks to interact with online communities about the issue of homophobia in sports, and more specifically, discuss the possibility of an openly gay athlete in each of the five major sports coming out publicly while actively playing: football, baseball, basketball, soccer, or hockey.
  • A tool to educate viewers about homophobia in professional sports, past and present.
  • A resource providing in-depth video interviews with pivotal sports figures speaking about homophobia in sports.
